About the Triangle Gay Men's Chorus

The Triangle Gay Men's Chorus (TGMC) is a nonprofit performing arts organization that seeks to bring quality men's choral music to the Triangle area that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. We recognize the power of music to communicate important truths about common human conditions and the value of all people.

  • Located in the Triangle region of North Carolina, encompassing the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.
  • Artistic Director: Mr. John-Philip Mullinax.
  • Accompanist: Mr. Joe Lupton
  • President and Chair of the TGMC Board of Directors: Mr. Larry Kroutil
  • Performs a full range of types and styles of men's choral music, including classical, popular, a cappella, jazz, blues, gospel, and music from theatre and film.
  • Our sound quality has been described as "full and beautifully balanced," "a multi-goosebump experience," and "one body of sound - crisp, clean, and perfectly lovely."
  • Performs 2 to 3 regular concerts per season plus a major fundraising event.

History

The Triangle Gay Men's Chorus was founded by a group of sixteen men on January 16, 1995.

We presented our debut concert on June 3, 1995. Since then, TGMC has performed throughout the Triangle area, across North Carolina, the USA and in Canada. In addition to our regular concert cycle, TGMC has performed for the following groups and events:

  • North Carolina GLBT Pride
  • American Choral Director's Association
  • Alliance of AIDS Services - Carolina
  • Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses
    Festival 2008 in Miami, FL
  • Human Rights Campaign
  • Environmental Protection Agency
  • Glaxo SmithKline
  • East Carolina University

Triangle Gay Men's ChorusTGMC receives grants for its programs from the Durham Arts Council's Annual Arts Fund, and support from the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Cultural Resources, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

However, our largest single source of financial support comes from individual donations and matching grants from their employers. TGMC is a non-profit organization with full 501(c)(3) status. Thus, donations to the Chorus are tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law.

OUR MISSION

The Triangle Gay Men's Chorus provides a venue for gay and gay-affirming individuals to develop their interests and display their musical talents in a professional manner. The goals are to strengthen the spirit and open presence of the gay community and to provide to the public-at-large a positive image of this community.

AFFILIATIONS

The Triangle Gay Men's Chorus is a member of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA). GALA Choruses provides support to more than 120 member choruses and 7,500 singers in North America, Europe and Australia. Through TGMC's affiliation with GALA Choruses, we receive support to grow both artistically and as an organization.
